Introduction

There’s something about the freedom of the open road that calls to those who seek adventure. For me, a month spent exploring the rugged beauty of Colorado became a journey of self-discovery, breathtaking views, and unforgettable moments. This trip became more than just a road trip—it was an opportunity to immerse myself in nature, test my self-reliance, and fully embrace the drifting lifestyle.

As the owner of Drifters Bike and Beach Rentals in St. Augustine, Florida, where we encourage outdoor adventure and exploration, I wanted to share some stories from this unforgettable journey. Whether you’re biking through St. Augustine’s beaches or planning your next road trip, the spirit of exploration remains the same.

Waking Up to New Horizons

Every morning in Colorado felt like a new adventure. I’d wake up with the sun and open the doors to discover a fresh, stunning view—often parked on a gravel road with nothing but mountains, valleys, and nature surrounding me. The best part? I had no rigid schedule. This spontaneous freedom became addictive. I stayed at each spot as long as I could, savoring every bit of the Colorado wilderness.

When I eventually hit the road, I never reached my next destination until well after dark. I’d wake up to a new landscape—one of those magical moments only the road can offer.

Lingering in the Mountains

As my journey continued, I knew that once I made it east of Denver, the mountains would be behind me. This realization weighed heavily on me, and I kept pushing my trip further to savor every last bit of the Rockies. Messages from home started coming in—friends reminding me that I had a business to run, that peak season at Drifters was approaching, and I needed to return. I knew they were right, but this experience felt once in a lifetime. I couldn’t rush back.

That feeling of having nowhere to go and all the time in the world? It’s intoxicating.

Lessons in Self-Reliance

Traveling solo on the road brings an unmatched sense of freedom, but it also comes with challenges. There were moments when things went wrong, like when Big Blue, my trusty van, needed some serious muffler repair. With no cell service and nobody nearby, I had to rely on myself. That’s where you really find out what you’re made of—solving problems as they arise, even if it means crawling under your van on a mountain pass.

These moments, though frustrating, are what make any trip feel like a true adventure. Every challenge became part of the story, one that shaped my perspective and strengthened my connection to the journey.

Memories That Last a Lifetime

My solo drift through Colorado wasn’t just about the sights—it was about the experiences. Surfing off the Oregon coast, navigating Sequoia National Forest under thick fog, watching sunsets in Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, and moonlit nights in Zion National Park. Every moment felt like a gift.

From mountain biking with old friends in the high desert to throwing a frisbee with a stranger in the woods, the road less traveled brought me countless unexpected moments. And, like any adventurer, I found solace in visiting family on the home stretch, bringing this unforgettable chapter to a close.

Conclusion: The Spirit of Adventure at Drifters

Whether you’re riding the waves off St. Augustine or embarking on your own road trip, the spirit of adventure lives in all of us. At Drifters Bike and Beach Rentals, we believe in exploring the world around us—whether that’s the sandy shores of Florida or the winding roads of a mountain pass. So, grab your bike, embrace the open road, and create your own adventure.
